How to Simplify Surds

Simplifying Surds

The ability to simplify Surds is an important skill in Mathematics. It allows operations such as multiplication, addition, subtraction and division to be done as simply as possible and minimises the size of the numbers used in the calculation

The trick to simplifying surds is to search for the highest square factor of the number, though we can also simplify surds using prime factors

We then use the following general rule for multiplying surds
